In our daily lives, we often use paper cups. Since the implementation of the national plastic ban policy, especially in the milk tea industry, terms like “bio cups” and “bio straws” have become well-known. So, what is the difference between bio cups and regular paper cups?
At first glance, the most obvious difference in bio cups is the material, which is “biodegradable.” Some might wonder, aren’t paper cups also biodegradable? Actually, regular paper cups contain plastic components. The outer coating of the paper cup is plastic, which ensures the cup’s waterproof function but is not biodegradable. In contrast, bio cups are made from PLA (polylactic acid), a material extracted from corn, cassava, and other plants, which is fully biodegradable.
From the main characteristic of biodegradability, we can extend to the difference in raw materials mentioned above. Bio cups are mainly made from PLA, which is more environmentally friendly compared to traditional paper cups made from trees. A tree takes 5-10 years to grow into a large tree, while plants like corn only need a few months to grow. PLA made from these plants is more cost-effective in a fast-paced era and better meets environmental needs.
Additionally, with the development of society, biodegradable products often have special markings, which also facilitate national supervision. On bio cups or bio straws, you can first check the graphic mark, which is the “double J mark” for biodegradable plastic products. Secondly, you can check the text mark, including product material, degradation conditions, and product standards. The words “biodegradable” clearly indicate that it is a bio cup.
